MacAllister 12 Inch Sliding Mitre Saw Worth A Look!

I decided it was time to buy a new sliding compound mitre saw, but couldn’t decide which one to go for due to a number of reasons. You see I used to own a Dewalt 708, which at the time cost me around £700 to buy, but sadly this saw was stolen from my van so it left me a little reluctant to want to shell out a fortune on a new saw, only to have it possibly swiped again.

I needed to find a compromise so shopped around and of all places landed in B & Q Warehouse. I went there interested in a nice Makita sliding mitre saw as it was cheaper than the original Dewalt I had and also had the ‘double bevel’ feature, which allows you to cut intricate compound angles without the need to turn your timber around. The Makita was still retailing at around £500 though.

Amazingly, right next to it was a saw called the Macallister 305 mm double bevel sliding mitre; and get this!! it was on offer at £ 129.99, with yet another 15 % to be deducted at the till so the whole package worked out to be around £110 or so.

It had most of the features my Dewalt 708 had but also, additionally had a laser red eye guide so it seemed an absolute ‘must have’ buy.

Been putting it to the test and I can tell you that the saw has much to offer, with accurate cuts and a decent laser guide to help you out. I can feel the difference in sturdiness in comparison to my former saw but on the whole, at £110, it’s a giveaway. Also, as much as I’d hate to have a power tool nicked from my van again, I’d feel a whole lot better losing a £110 saw than a £700 one.

I won’t go on about it anymore, other than to say, if you’re in the running for a new mitre saw, get yourself down to B AND Q to check it out for yourself. Not sure how long the sale will last!

  1. We have been doing our floor and ended up purchasing a miter box with a hand saw. Its been pretty hard but we have been able to get most of our trim done. I bet the MacAllister would have cut our time in half. Sounds like a nice tool.

  2. hmm… I like your suggestion of buying a B and Q one, but did you consider to spot a good deal from any online auction websites. I hope you know that you can procure some products through auction as well, or sometimes people just put up their second hand goods for sale. So it might be helpful.

  3. Sounds like a great tool. I’m sorry that your original saw was nicked, but it sounds like you made a great new discovery. Just goes to show you that the most expensive is not always the best.

  4. I was sorry my original saw got nicked too! Bu you are correct in saying that the most expensive saw is not always the best. a good tradesman can work wonders with the simplest of tools!
