Making Openings For Windows & Doorways In Your Brickwork.
When building a new external wall, be sure to have taken consideration for any new window or doors that are to be fitted. Find out the exact measurement for the new window or door and make provision for this in your brickwork. You will want to make sure that you allow for at least 10mm either side of the opening to make sure that you will be able to fix your new window or door frame easily in place and be able to plumb it with little difficulty.
Don’t just ‘guestimate’ sizes or work from just a tape measure. Build a wooden frame to work to or use cavity closer frames to ensure your opening is accurate, at the correct size required and square. Secure the frame you are working to, making sure it doesn’t move or go out of plumb whilst building the brickwork. You will need to check for plumb and level periodically to ensure you are not building out of alignment. It is very easy to do this, and you may not even notice and discrepancies until it is too late so make sure you perform regular checks.
If you’ve used cavity closer frames then these will stay in the brickwork ready to receive your new frame, and if you’ve knocked up a temporary wooden frame out of scant or similar etc, then when the brickwork is firm enough, or the next day, gently tap this out of the opening.
When brickwork is fully set, fit the new frame and you’re all done.
