In fact, it’s actually becoming quite a trend now with great incentives for owners to stay put. Let’s think about this for a minute! Even if a homeowner is fortunate enough to be granted a new mortgage to upgrade to a bigger property (a task in itself as lenders are keeping a tight hold on finances now), there is also all the additional costs such as conveyance fees, surveys, removals etc; the list just goes on.It is hardly any wonder then that homeowners are extending living spaces.

1.Find a builder, architect or planning designer to draft a set of plans with your intentions so that they may be considered by planning depts or building control etc.

2. Speak to friends or colleagues to see what alterations they have made to their property and ask to see the work to enable you to get a feel for what you may have done to your own home.

3. Arrange to get quotes from at least 3 builders before deciding on hiring somebody. Word of mouth I feel is always the best way to hire a builder but if this is not possible then ask builders to supply you with references for work they have completed.
